Fall, First Video Project and a Fabulous Editing Software Review!

Fall Vibes!

The goal of this project was to produce three short recipe videos. The coffee drinks I chose were developed for fall-themed content for a local coffee roaster. Fall is the perfect time to introduce flavors like Chai, Pumpkin, and Caramel into your coffee. These videos provide a few examples of how you can re-create delicious drinks at home.

When making content for clients, I try to keep in mind the client’s brand, vision, and goals. Branding can be clean and serious, or fun and playful. A vision can range from seeking to reach every consumer in the country to specifically making content that will reach a local customer base. The goal of posting the video may be: to introduce a new product, to give customers ideas on how to use the product, to set a tone for a new campaign, or many other things.

For this project, the brand prides itself in being high-quality yet accessible to everyone. The vision of the company is to connect as much as possible with its strong local customer base. The goal of the video is to tease a blog post that includes all the written recipes. The videos are meant to get the viewer interested, and seek out the company website to read the blog, and to check out the products used for each recipe.

(Mini) Software Review: DaVinci Resolve 17

These videos will be turned into TikToks, Instagram reels, and posts for social media. I used an editing software outside of these applications to enhance the quality of the video. I was able to make precise cuts, adjust the color grade and saturation, and produce a video that did not fall to the restrictions placed by social media platforms. TikTok leaves your video with a watermark that can be distracting and unhelpful for the algorithm used on other platforms for exposure and views.

I shot using my camera, rather than my iPhone, and edited the footage in DaVinci Resolve. I chose DaVinci over Premier this time, mainly to see what the program had to offer. I was initially skeptical of the program’s free version available for download. However, after working with it and learning from all the available free online tutorials, I was impressed with the quality. It is almost suspiciously good.

This is a great program if you are new to video editing, and do not want to spend the money on Adobe Premier quite yet. For my purposes, involving only basic editing operations on small amounts of footage, it was perfect. Without some of the extra gadgets and gizmos offered by Premier, the program was able to upload media instantly, and all my editing was done at a much quicker pace. Though the layout is slightly different, the features I used were so much like Premier that I didn’t feel like I had to learn anything from scratch.

Overall, I was impressed and happy with the quality of the end result. I have a lot to learn about this software, but would highly recommend this to anyone new to video editing!
